A collector's idea takes shape

Pinball Expo identifies Robert 'Rob' Berk as its founder and chairman. The show's official history says a 1984 questionnaire tested interest in a national pinball convention, followed by the first event in Chicago in 1985. With help from Bill Kurtz and Mike Pacak, Berk turned an interest in recognizing pinball designers and artists into a gathering.

The people as well as the machines

The 2026 event is listed for October 14–17 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel in Illinois. Its official website promotes free-play machines, seminars, tournaments and an autograph session. Our editorial reading is that these different ways to participate can bring the craft of pinball into focus alongside the enjoyment of playing.

An itinerary with room to learn

Our recommendation is to balance playing time with one learning opportunity. Before approaching a maker or speaker, write down a specific question about a game, a design choice or the work behind it. Check the current schedule and admission package details, especially for activities that may have separate conditions. Leave time to explore an unfamiliar machine rather than only seeking favorites.

The promoter's lasting idea

Berk's published origin story is useful because it puts appreciation of creative work at the center of an event. For visitors, that offers a richer way to explore a hobby show: follow the people, processes and histories behind what you enjoy. A question about a machine can become the beginning of a conversation about how a hobby continues to evolve.
